You ll need to reinforce the junction box if you plan to install a heavy fixture such as a ceiling fan.

Moving a ceiling fixture the easy way.
You ll be using a drywall mounted junction box which clamps directly to the ceiling drywall.
Detach the light fixture from the electrical box and slowly lower the light fixture.
Pull the fixture wires into the electric box and make connections.
Turn one of the screws on the front of the box to rotate the plastic anchor in position against the back on the drywall.
Identify the location for the new light fixture and use the stud sensor to make sure there are no joists directly behind the ceiling in that area.
Remove the screws holding the box into place in the ceiling.
Fit the box into the hole until the front flange butts against the drywall.
Install the required length of new wiring to the new location for the light fixture.
Turn off the power to the circuit that powers the light by turning off the circuit breaker in the main panel.
Make the opening in the ceiling for the new light fixture.
The old junction box was located in the center of the laundry room but we wanted the light fixture to hang in the center of the doorway 36 from the ceiling.
Then we turned off the power and disconnected the light from the fixture box.
Remove the existing light fixture junction box and turn it so that it is accessible from above.
Pull the box out slightly while you tighten the screw to maintain the anchor in this position.
